[ERA : 60s, 70s / Folk, Folk-Rock, Country Rock ]

Raven presents the first Best Of focusing on the career of the late singer/songwriter Tom Jans. Loving Arms Best Of 1971-1982 is the perfect introduction to Jan's beguiling mix of folk, folk rock and country rock. This multi-label anthology culls the best of his recordings for A&M, Columbia and Pony Canyon (Japan). Jans collaborated with Mimi Farina (younger sister of Joan Baez) on the beautiful, underrated folk album Take Heart (1971). Jans went solo, writing and recording Loving Arms which was a hit cover for Dobie Gray. Jans' own version appeared on his critically acclaimed self-titled album (1974) produced by Mentor Williams. The Eyes of a Lonely Child (1975) included Lowell George (slide guitar), David Linley (guitar) and Jim Keltner (drums). Dark Blonde (1976) is considered to be his masterpiece, featuring a classic mix of country and folk roots and politically charged lyrics. Jans final album was the impossibly rare Japanese-only Champion. Jans died in 1984 and his music is overdue for re-evaluation. Fans of Tom Waits, James Taylor and Jackson Browne will find much to enjoy here. With superb audio quality and detailed notes this is a must for fans of classic singer / songwriter folk and rock.
